YOGA (योग) & Its elements.

Yoga is derived from the word '𝘠𝘶𝘫' , which means to unite or to join .Therefore , 𝘠𝘰𝘨 is the unification of Atma(soul) with Paramatma (divine/supreme soul).
𝘠𝘰𝘨 also means the unification of physical ,mental, (1/15)
intellectual and spiritual aspects of human being.

योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः (yogas chitta vritti nirodhah)- Yoga Sutra of Patanjali 1.2
which means “yoga is the removal of the fluctuations of the mind”. Chitta is mind, vrittis are thought impulses, nirodah is removal. (2/15)
Maharishi Patanjali explained 8 elements of 𝘠𝘰𝘨 /Yoga in Yoga Sutras .These are called 𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵-𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘴 or eight steps through which ultimate goal yog can be achieved, 𝘪.𝘦., union of our soul to supreme soul. (3/15)
These steps/limbs have come down to us as ‘Ashtanga Yoga’& these are as follows:
✧Yama
✧Niyama
✧Asana
✧Pranayama
✧Pratyahara
✧Dharana
✧Dhyana
✧Samadhi
✧Yama
-First limb of ashtanga yoga
-Through the practice of Yama one can abstain from doing things that keep (4/15)
one's mind involved in the indiscriminate struggle for survival. One can remain away from violence. (5/15)
- There are five Yama as described by Maharishi patanjali:
*Ahimsa or non- violence
*Satya or truthfullness
*Asteya or non- stealing
*Brahmacharya
*Aparigraha

✧Niyama
- are related to individual's body and senses. Niyamas are also ethical practices as yamas. (6/15)
- There are five niyamas :
*Saucha
*Santosh
*Tapa
*Swadhyaya
*Ishwara Pranidhana

✧Asana
-Asana means 'position or posture of body'.

-स्थिरसुखमासनम् ॥४६॥
"The meditation posture should be steady and comfortable. (7/15)

Asana is a posture that one can hold for a period of time, staying relaxed, steady, comfortable and motionless.

✧Pranayama
- is the control of the process of breathing. (8/15)
- There are three constituents of Pranayama
*Puraka(inhalation)
*Kumbhaka (Retaining the breath)
*Rechaka ( Exhalation)
- Pranayama helps in regulating the metabolic activities and enhances the function of heart and lungs and also provides longevity to life. (9/15)
✧Pratyahara
- is the process of self control in which an individual becomes able to control over his senses.
- The practitioner of pratyahara starts feeling extreme pleasure in Ishwara.

✧Dharana
- is the Concentration of mind. (10/15)
- The mind have tendency to get scattered but if the scattered mind is brought under control and set at one focal point( can be in the centre of forehead or navel) , concentration can be achieved.
- Dharana is the first step towards Samadhi. (11/15)
It enables a yogi to go ahead towards dhyana and Samadhi.

✧Dhyana
- is the process to complete constancy of mind.
- Dhyana is the state of pure Atma, which is consciousness and self-awareness
- Dhyana is integrally related to Dharana, one leads to other. (12/15)
Dharana is a state of mind, Dhyana the process of mind.

✧Samadhi
- The union of individual's soul with the supreme soul is called Samadhi.
- During the stage of dhyana, when the disappearance of self - awarness takes place,the yogi attains the stage of Samadhi. (13/15)
He begins to feel the real truth and begins to experience divine pleasure.

In last Yog is not merely a group of excercise only .But it is a whole journey.
