Hi folks! This is Yi Peng, New Naratif’s Social Media and Community Manager. Yesterday’s research article was shared with my share link, which unfortunately was paywalled (something we have to fix). It caused quite a stir and I would like to address it. https://twitter.com/NewNaratif/status/1362356193763672068?s=20
Every new journalism and research article that we release is always free to access for everyone who follows us on social media. Hence it was an honest mistake that the research article yesterday was behind a paywall.
The response we received regarding the paywall was eye-opening. We understand that a $5/month or $52/year membership fee is out of reach for many, especially in this economic climate, which is why we are committed to making our stories accessible.
However, yesterday’s mishap reminded us that we need to explain some of the challenges we face in balancing accessibility and sustainability, and what it takes to publish the work we do. Last year, we came close to shutting down.
We made it to another year thanks to generous donations & grants. In the long run, we want to operate entirely on membership fees. This is the most sustainable business model and doesn’t rely on selling your data to advertisers.
We exist to bring you stories that demand critical thinking and promote democracy, human rights, and class consciousness across Southeast Asia. We spend time getting to know our readers on Discord. We will never flood your feed with cheap “content”.
Good journalism costs money. These are our current rates: https://newnaratif.com/pitches/ , and we want to raise them. Raising our rates will also raise our operating costs, but we believe good work must be well-compensated.
We would also like to highlight the labour that goes into the work we do, which consists of but is not limited to: writing, researching, editing, creating art, podcasting, and marketing. More on that by our Comics and Illustrations Editor, @CharisLoke: https://twitter.com/charisloke/status/1362424638161190914?s=20
