(THREAD)
Bashar Jackson was born on July 20, 1999, in Canarsie, Brooklyn. He was never the perfect kid as he had to switch from 9 different schools where he was eventually expelled in 8th grade, for bringing a gun to school. Where he was then put on house arrest for 2 years.
Bashar started to play basketball where it became a big part of his life. He decided to enroll in the Rocktop Academy in Philadelphia. Later he was forced to leave due to a heart murmur that was found. He was crushed and devastated. Bashar then turned to the streets.
In 2018 Bashar and a fellow rapper went to the studio to record. His friend was passed out on the couch Bashar wanted to see if he could rap, that night he found his answer. On January 28, 2019 he released “Flexing” where his presence in the Brooklyn drill scene was made known
Becoming beloved in Brooklyn, Bashar was able to sign with Victor Victor Worldwide in April, 2019. Where he then released his hit single “Welcome to the Party”, instantly that track exploded, and was shown love all across the world! From then on his respect and fame only went up!
A few months later on July 26, 2019 when he released his first mixtape “Meet the Woo”. Singles such as “Dior” and “Welcome to the Party” were included which were major songs that pushed his career. This was the first installment of the Meet the Woo series and It was a success.
Bashar had one of the most notable voices in the entire rap game! He used that to his advantage. Growing his fan base, doing shows, and connecting with the community. Bashar was becoming the face of drill in New York.
Later on February 7, 2020, the second installment of his series was added: “Meet the Woo 2”. It included many songs that become well known in rap. The go to songs of many parties, and all in all to get everyone pumped to hear his deep voice, growls, and performance on any song.
Bashar was growing exponentially! His fame! His respect! His love for his fans! Pop Smoke was changing from the man when he turned to the street in his early life to a superstar loved by everyone! Not only becoming the face of New York drill, but drill across the world!
Tragically on February 19, 2020 at around 4:30 am, four men broke into the house he was renting and shot him twice. Within minutes the police arrived at his place finding him with gunshot wounds, he was rushed to the hospital where a few hours later he was pronounced dead.
The day before he was murdered there were many post on his social media, one image which included the address of the home he was staying at. It was also believed his death was gang related at first. Due to the fact he was tied to the Crips. His death was painful to so many fans.
Pop Smoke was ripped from our lives at the young age of 20, and truly many destroyed for an immense amount of time. I don’t think I will personally get over his death. He was growing and growing! Becoming the biggest in the rap game.
It was announced that on June 12, 2020 Pop Smoke debate album will be released posthumously titled: Shoot For The Stars Aim For The Moon. It wasn’t until July 3rd, his album was released, due to respects of the George Floyd protest. Upon release it was an instant success!
This album showed a different side of. Still the deep and growly voice we love, but more slow and low tempo beats. Really bringing out a passionate caring side of Bashar. Every song charted in the top 100 and one in top 10. For many it was a perfect posthumous release.
On July 20, 2020 Bashar would’ve turned 21. He would’ve been able to witness how amazing his career was going, and the amount of lives he changed. His influence was seen globally. Changing the scene for drill across rap. Leaving behind a legacy that was priceless.
On the same day 15 new tracks were add to Shoot For The Stars Aim For The Moon in honor of his birthday. Where more even more songs charted.
I don’t have enough time in the world to express how sad I was to hear of his death. He brought new life to rap that was unseen. His happiness and style gave us unforgettable memories. His influence is also still being seen today and is still the face of Brooklyn drill.
Undoubtedly one of my favorite rappers, finding him on one of his first releases made me stick with him, and watch his fame grow! Though his death was so hard for me, I know he’d be happy to see everyone blasting his music, and seeing us be happy.
Bashar Jackson went through it all! From bad schools, the street life, growth, fame, changing for the better, to sharing back with his community! His death shook the hearts of many. But his legacy will never die! One of the greatest drill rappers of all time!đź’«đź’«đź–¤
