So much Anti-Indigenous racism coming predominantly from US, Canada & UK accounts, but aimed at First Nations peoples of the continent now known as Australia. If you could recommend a Aboriginal &/or Torres Strait Islander novel to combat the hate & ignorance, what would it be?
I'd recommend:
White Girl - Tony Birch
Terra Nullius - Claire G Coleman
Taboo - Kim Scott
Song of the Crocodile - Nardi Simpson
Rabbit Proof Fence - Doris Pilkington
Too Much Lip - Melissa Lucashenko
The Yield - Tara June Winch
Plains of Promise - Alexis Wright.
And so many more!
Non-fiction recommendations:
The White Possessive - Aileen Morton-Robinson
Biting the Clouds - Fiona Foley
Living on Stolen Land - Ambelin Kwaymullina
My Place - Sally Morgan
The Politics of Identity - Bronwyn Carson
Finding Eliza - Larissa Behrendt
Who wants to do a poetry list?
and a list of children's books, anthologies, short story collections. So many excellent blak books (i.e Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander authored) Many available internationally. There really is no excuse for the level of ignorance on display from these overseas accounts.
