I know it’s freezing in Texas, but this Ted Cruz Cancun trip has me thinking about something a public health expert said to me once about heat waves and climate change. Once a place is too hot, the rich (and powerful) will move.
He added the flip side to that: “The folks with less money, they're going to be in their one home. And they're going to have to deal with the conditions in their one home.” They can’t escape.
Regardless of whether or what’s happening in Texas is climate change related, we know more extreme weather is coming (it’s already here), and this will be the dynamic. Those with the means will move, be able to get out, hire private fire fighters. The rest will not.
Here’s our 2019 story on heat patterns in U.S. cities (the wealthier already live where it’s cooler in many major cities). These patterns will keep playing out. https://www.npr.org/2019/09/03/754044732/as-rising-heat-bakes-u-s-cities-the-poor-often-feel-it-most
