My syllabus said for students to dress up on speech days

One emailed me

“I am not trying to disrespect your class,

but..I don’t own any nice dress up clothes...”

Just one of the many ways we may unintentionally as educators

shame our students

for literally just being poor

I’m constantly learning how to be a better teacher...

When I shared this story with my husband he said

“Oh yea. I didn’t like going to church in college for this reason. All the other guys had nice suits and it always made me feel embarrassed to even walk in”

To those who are currently thinking “they’re lying cause they didn’t want to do it”
