I’m amazed by the need of out-of-state people to criticize Texans during this horrible time. I’m calling it “Disaster Shaming.” But, as a Texan who has lived in both NYC and Chicago, I would like to respond to some of those asshats here.
Some have said, “Quit complaining & go out and plow your street.” Hey dummies, we don’t OWN plows. Or snow shovels. This is like a foot of snow landing in central Florida or LA, which means the people & the cities don't have salt & plows at the ready. Here's a highway in my city.
Pipes are bursting left and right. In the north, pipes are insulated better and buried deeper. Peoples who were already dealing with no power here are now dealing with flooding homes.
To the people in the north who are saying, “We live without power and heat all the time. Get over it.” Your houses are built to trap heat. Perhaps you have a fireplace or backup generator. We spend our time trying to keep cool with cold surfaces like tile, limestone, & concrete.
How many of you have to boil your water before you can drink it during a power outage? Any of you have an electric stove? So uh, how are you supposed to drink water?
Texas cities & towns are SPREAD OUT. You can walk very few places. In NYC-bodegas on every corner. Same in Chicago. I could always get supplies. Grocery trucks cannot reach our stores here. Look at this grocery store line on Tuesday.
Many Texans don't own a cold-weather coat, gloves, wool sweater or socks. They certainly don’t own snow boots that will stay dry after walking in deep snow & ice. So even if you DO live close enough to a store to walk there, you probably don't have decent gear for it.
