I’ve been in public service for 20yrs, 12 elected. Never held executive level position. However every time I’ve gone through a disaster there has always been role for non-executive level EO’s. You have staff, contacts, access to resources to steer towards your community. #txlege
My first disaster was 2001 TS Allison working for former Rep Gene Green. He had us get FEMA on line and make flyers in English and Spanish so we could go door-to-door and provide resources. We brought FEMA and SBA to our hoods. I met R & D congressional staff during briefings.
It was time when Texas EO’s both R & D fought together for Texas. We as staff would meet weekly to strategize our response. It was devastating talking to families who had lost their homes to flood waters. It was different time. #txlege
I learned valuable lessons from Gene Green, SJL, CM Galloway. You have to be present, be aggressive and work your ass off for your people. You stay on the phones w/ Mayors, County Judges, Governor so that when resources are distributed your community is not left out. #txlege
We’ve been through Allison, Ike, Katrina, Rita, Tax Day, Memorial Day, Harvey. During Harvey I set up one man rescue team. Constituents called me about being rescued so I gathered a list of folks & had FD’s or friends with heavy construction vehicles rescue ppl. #txlege
