You know what's a really hurtful myth about food insecurity? That if you're fat, you can't be under-nourished.

There are so many ways poverty and food insecurity make you fat, and they all stack together to make poverty and weight far less simple than enough vs. not enough.

🧵
2. First off, let's talk about cheap food. It's carbs. It's foods based in potato, rice, pasta, bread & pastry.

It's porridge for breakfast, beans on toast for lunch, macaroni cheese for dinner.

It's 7p bags of crisps and 40p loaves of sliced white. It's beige food.
3. Let's talk about the cost of excercise. "Going for a run is free"- is it? Because trainers with any impact resistance (like from a heavy stride) start at about £80, then there's leggings, high vis vest, childcare, MP3 player if you are following a program, even a water bottle?
4. Poverty is DEPRESSING. It's hard, miserable, limiting, frustrating & exhausting... If it isn't, you don't have poverty, you have a lower income. You don't know what poverty is until you fear for your needs.

You know what's a symptom of depression? Eating pattern gone to hell.
5. You know that experience some of you are having with lockdown where you are crumbling because there is nothing to do? That's a skint kids' permanent life. No judo, no parties, no swimming, no days out, no anywhere.

Home all day. Bored. Depressed. What do you think happens?
6. Adults stuck home are largely going to fall into two categories, can work (therefore tied to a 35h a week work search requirement, internet based) or can't work (medical conditions). The complexity of illnesses and weight is a whole specialism of medicine, it's that complex.
7. Being overweight and poor generates incoming hate, as if you got this way from foie gras, not from Smartprice pasta with a tin of watery tomatoes smeared over it, seasoned with basil & sadness.

All the more accute that while that diet makes you fat, it robs you of vitamins.
8. Poor people are often fat. More so than rich ones actually. You know why? Choices.

Healthy fat people are plentiful and as precious as any other person, but not all fatness goes hand in hand with health, I mean that's obvious right? People pay fortunes trying to not be fat.
9. We throw the rulebook out the window when it comes to punching down.

"They are fat, look at them, they are lavishing in excess", makes about as much sense as the idea of having kids "for the money" ha! Bullshit.

No leap is too far to insult our most vulnerable.
10. Last, but not least, I leave this with you-

If you skip meals your body goes into starvation mode to hold onto energy stores. This is why weight loss diets insist you eat 6-8 times a day.

When dinner turns intermittent, it's common to gain weight, even on fewer calories!
