If you relied on Facebook for your morning hit of news, I really strongly recommend subscribing to these services which go straight to your inbox each morning (thread)
Crikey - The Worm. Another great round up of the stories worth your attention. It explains how news stories have developed to this point and what to expect next, curates the best commentary from all publications, and has the front pages of the day. Sign up https://www.crikey.com.au/get-the-worm/
ABC’s newsmail is brilliant. It is delivered twice daily, if you like. Everything is customizable. You can choose what verticles you want (top stories, breaking news, sport, health, world, even good news). Sign up https://mobile.abc.net.au/news/alerts/subscribe/
If you like a hit of American news, I really enjoy the New York Times Morning and Evening briefings. It’s basically a top 10 list of the big stories, with the 10th often an odd spot style story. Sign up https://www.nytimes.com/newsletters/morning-briefing
If you prefer your news in podcast form, The Briefing is great. A solid line up with Tom Tilley, Jan Fran, Annika Smithurst and Jamila Rizvi. You get your headlines, as well as the bigger questions raised by the main stories of the day. Subscribe https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-briefing/id1507116817
Finally, remember the news is bad for your brain. It can increase anxiety and depression. So if you’re not feeling 100%, maybe take the Facebook news ban as a sign to take a break. There’ll still be corrupt politicians, scandalous sports stars and a dying planet when you return.
Just don’t only take your only news from the Facebook feed of that Craig Kelly-esque uncle you avoid at Christmas.
