It's hard to overstate how much Montana's GOP-controlled Legislature and governor are pushing law and policy hard right, away from norms Montanans have taken for granted for decades, after keeping much of their overall agenda under wraps during the election.
Some examples: guns https://twitter.com/NBCMontana/status/1362529472746905602?s=20
the judicial branch https://twitter.com/KellyKortum/status/1362516019730731011?s=20
Stripping away some of the strongest, hard-fought labor protections in the country https://nbcmontana.com/news/local/montana-legislature-considers-right-to-work-laws
Anti-abortion laws that routinely were killed or vetoed in past legislative sessions. https://www.mtpr.org/post/montana-house-approves-four-anti-abortion-bills
Obviously not all these things will become law, but there is a theme, and the state is shifting into different place than the one many have taken for granted.
There is much more, but the point is, if you talk to people, nobody who's been around the MT Legislature more than a minute has seen a remaking of the state like the one we're watching now.
