Looks like this is still doing numbers, so here's a thread of everything I can think of about illustration pricing & business insights! (1/12) https://twitter.com/harryewoodgate/status/1362364775519444999
First up: go follow @litebox_info! Their illustration wage survey is freely available & has details about all sorts of clients, fees, payment & licence terms, & you can also anonymously submit your own projects to add to the database (2/12)
The Dark Art of Pricing by @jessicahische is $25 with a comprehensive explanation of contracts, day rates & calculating licence & usage fees:

ām a big fan of @miss_magpie_fashion_spyās āMoney Talksā blog series, where she invites illustrators to share insights about their financial journeys, including breakdowns of income streams, expenses and business strategy: https://www.missmagpiefashionspy.com/blog/money-talks-2020-illustrator-finances (4/12)
Another great account to follow is @thenoisypencil, who, like @litebox_info, call out bad practice whilst signal boosting *actual* opportunities (5/12)
Hereās a brilliant, insightful thread from @stephen_collins about graphic novels, illustrating for publishing and the importance and immense value in finding agent representation: https://twitter.com/stephen_collins/status/1254024731952664578?s=20 (6/12)
Of course, @theaoi have a dearth of resources available to members, as well as some free-to-view articles about pricing, negotiating contracts and other business practice. They also compile directories of commissioners which can be useful for building client lists (7/12)
Something I've found useful is joining illustrator Slack groups where we can ask questions, share WIPs & business/pricing advice. There are several around, including one run by @thenoisypencil and also The Illustrators, started by @benillustrator (8/12)
The other brilliant thing @benillustrator has done in the past is @theillosurvey. Here are the findings from 2019 - although it is a couple of years ago, many of the insights are just as relevant now: https://www.itsnicethat.com/news/ben-the-illustrator-hire-an-illustrator-illustrators-survey-2019-illustration-130319?utm_content=buffer6bde1&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=intsocial (9/12)
Re. pricing surveys, @lisa_maltby has also done an excellent survey, which you can read about here: https://www.lisamaltby.com/blog/illustration-pricing-survey-2019-the-response Sheās also made a guide to pricing illustration, as well as an entire course called the āNo Bullshit Guide to Making a Living from Your Artā (10/12)
I've also done talks, lectures & placements at various places including the V&A about business practice & starting up as a freelancer, so happy to help in any small way I can! (11/12)
Iām sure thereās more stuff Iāve missed, which I will add later - and please feel free to add to this thread if you have any suggestions too! Thereās way too much exploitative shit going on in this industry & us illustrators need to have each other's backs
