If lockdowns are extended to Mar 9, retailers in Toronto and Peel will have been closed to in-store sales for 162 days (from Mar 24-May 19 & again starting on Nov 23). This represents nearly half a year of lost in-store sales.
As of Mar. 9, hair salons in Toronto will have been closed for 198 days, gyms for 270 days and indoor dining for 279 days.
How on earth are these businesses expected to survive another extended lockdown with no end in sight?
Zero evidence has been offered to justify locking down business activity in the first place. And now, we are locking down again as a handful of officials report they are scared, again, without offering supporting evidence.
Do the small business owners who are seeing their futures ruined and their homes seized by the banks not deserve a presentation of the evidence that has led the GTA to break from the decisions of other public health officials in virtually every other part of Canada?
Schools and businesses have reopened (or never closed) in nearly every other region of Canada - including those with far higher COVID numbers. This seems unimportant to officials in Toronto.
Of course, everyone is concerned about the impact of variants. No one wants to see COVID numbers rise again. But are we going to lockdown Canada's largest city until September? The goal posts continue to change. This is so deeply unfair.
