Eh!? These are rubbish saves.

I thought you had to attack every ball and not dive backwards?

😬😬😬😬😬
Ps this is clearly a joke 😂

Diving backwards has been seen as a negative for so long.

But it happens so much more than you think and can be the reason a lot of saves are made.

However, like other things that’s not “textbook” it becomes the “cause” when a goal is conceded.
But when analysing goals, how can we differentiate between anatomical errors and mental errors?
GKs train so much on “attacking the ball” but usually with pre mediated service.

As soon as service is unpredictable, reaction time decreases.

Use PKs as an a example. You’re most likely to see a GK coming off line & attacking it as they’ve made up their mind earlier
If they were to try and react to the ball they would struggle to “attack” as they’re reacting to the ball from such close distances. You’re going to try and meet the ball from beyond
Greater reaction time allows you to “attack the ball”.

Anticipating a situation.
We really think “diving backwards” should be re-worded because it makes it sound so weak.

You can still create force onto the ball just in a different line.

It can also help with parrying / tipping the ball into a better angle away from players or around the post as an example
It can also increase chances of securing the ball as it will help absorb the force.
Watch games & really look at how GKs secure the ball or when they make majority of their saves. You’ll see it happen so much more than you think.

How often do you really see “textbook goalkeeping”?
