Livestream for #CountdownToMars to Mars is below 🛰

And while we wait for Entry, Descent and Landing of @NASAPersevere here are some Fun Facts About Mars! 🤓

1/🧵 https://twitter.com/NASAPersevere/status/1362481116003770368
2/ The fourth planet from our sun is named for the god of war. To Romans that was Mars. To Greeks it was Ares ⚔️
3/ Mars has 2 moons; Phobos & Deimos.
They look like they got roughed up 🌚🌝
4/ It would take more than six of Mars to fill the volume of Earth. Small but mighty 💪
5/ A day on Mars (a Sol) is 24h37m in length.
A year is 687 Earth days.
So you are much more productive on Mars 🌞
6/ Mars has only 38% the gravity of Earth.
If you weigh 100 lbs on Earth you way 38 lbs on Mars.
So your jump shot is epic 🏀
7/ The average temperature on Mars is -63* Celsius. And while it can get up to 20*C at noon, near the equator, during Martian summertime, the temps plunge back down to -73*C~ at night. Mars can get as cold as -153*C at the poles 🥶
8/ The atmosphere on Mars sucks… as in it has very little and it is not friendly to us. It is mostly CO2 😷
9/ Mars has a very weak magnetic field compared to Earth’s. It lets in a lot more harmful radiation compared to Earth. It’s about 2.5 times higher than what astronauts experience on the International Space Station ☢️ https://phys.org/news/2016-11-bad-mars.html
10/ The distance between the orbits of Earth and Mars is pretty consistent at 54 million kilometres. But the actual distance between the two planets changes as they move through their orbits. Mars has come as close as 56-million km and as far as 401-million km 🗺
11/ Radio signals from Mars can reach Earth in as little as 3-minutes and as much as 22-minutes depending on where the planets are in relation to each other. It will take us around 11-minutes to hear from NASA Perseverance to see if it made it safely to the ground 📡
12/ The journey to Mars is made easier when our planets ‘line up' every 26-months. That’s why you see so many launches and arrivals happening at the same time. It takes on average 9months~ to get there with our current technology 🚀
13/ Mars is a planet entirely populated by robots (as far as we know 👽).

The 4 rovers are: Sojourner (’97); Opportunity (’04); Spirit (’04); Curiosity (’12); and soon Perseverance will make 5 🤖
Success!!! 🎉 https://twitter.com/NASAPersevere/status/1362507436611956736?s=20
