"Deadly" Biases
1) Anchoring Bias:
We tend to tie ourselves to the 1st things we learn about. The issue here is that you can put blinders on once you have had a little success. Anchoring is a "gateway" bias that leads to, & strengthens other biases.

2) Confirmation Bias:
When we believe in something we tend to only hear ideas that strengthen our reality. This leads us to dismiss REAL information or someone that might be able to help us. The issue here is that we stunt our growth because we don't seek new ideas.

3) Self-Serving Bias:
It is hard for us to look inward because it is easier to blame external factors on our failures than look in the mirror. Self-serving bias blinds us to ways that we can improve. Success only feeds this & losing lands the blame on something else.

4) Survivor Bias:
We try to emulate experts & get blinded by their success. When we forget to look at all those that failed, we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg. Not everything that worked for successful people/programs will work for us. Seek the whole picture.

5) Outcome Bias:
When we only look at the outcome we lose sight of how that decision was made. We reinforce bad behavior because the outcome resulted in success. For ex, you run a blitz & it results in a sack. You will run it again even though it has design issues.

These are just a few of my favorite biases.
It is important as coaches to understand how these are present in our own lives & look inwards when dealing with success & failure.
Always be seeking the truth & attempt to grow.
As I tell my kids all the time: 1% better!
