Been thinking about accessibility to tertiary education.
My kids are what my boss called “front of the queue” kids. Bright, middle class, involved māmā who knows the system.
But if you don’t how hard is it to get to university.... 1/n

Fe free first year is a big barrier removed
But travel costs to uni, accommodation costs -the first instalment is paid before student loans kick in. If you don’t have $8k available how do you pay that..
alternatively look for someone/somewhere to live off campus

Things like knowing about scholarships, writing applications, needing the internet to apply are all barriers to students.
Knowing the difference between US and AS for uni entrance, how to get textbook cheap are all thing uni students need to learn 3/n

But if you have no experience of tertiary education in your family it makes it even harder. How can schools and unis improve access.4/n
And how can programs such as https://www.puhoro.co.nz/ and https://www.auckland.ac.nz/en/fmhs/study-with-us/vision-2020/whakapiki-ake-.html be expanded
And thanks to https://www.macdiarmid.ac.nz/news-and-events/events/discoverycamp-2021/ for your work too.
But there needs to be more work on the ground as well. 5/5(or something)
