/ WallStreetBets is a forum to discuss trades, not politics. According to Space Peanut, discussing politics was the surest way to get kicked out. Moreover, WSB was not inaccurate — they predicted a short squeeze would occur if they all bought GameStop and they were right.
/ So why was WSB accused of “disinformation”? Because it was an easy way to get the forum taken down. Discord actually bought into this argument, Reddit to its credit did not.
/ As a massively decentralized online movement, WSB is completely dependent on communication platforms like Discord and Reddit. Individually the members are weak; they can’t take on the big hedge funds. But together as a movement, they can challenge Melvin and Citron.
/ Therefore, a bogus accusation of disinformation was a dagger to the heart of the WSB movement. It threatened to sever their lines of communication in the midst of the battle. Who would benefit from that? The big hedge funds on the other side of the trade.
/ Congress needs to ask who made these bogus claims of disinformation. They should ask the hedge funds whether they or anyone working for them or at their direction had anything to do with it.
/ Seeking to disrupt your opponent’s ability to trade at a key moment by weaponizing speech rules should be seen for what it is — a type of market manipulation.
/ The only “disinformation” involved in GameStop consists of the bogus claims of disinformation leveled against WSB and Reddit. That’s what Congress should be investigating today, not nonexistent “foreign actors”. //
