In my lunch break, I watched Kier’s speech and here are a few comms and messaging thoughts that I had that would help people even pay attention to him and the party.
1. Get a soundbite slogan. The left is again making the mistake of monologuing when the right gives sayings that people can easily apply to themselves. The left has lost the last three elections and a referendum and others. See #YesWeCan #TakeBackControl
2. Over messaging. I’m not sure what I’m meant to take away from this talk. He talked about a few things but nothing really landed, he talked about the Tories too much. Reacting rather than an inspiring proactive message.
More charisma needed. The QC stance and delivery style works in the commons, but not for a speech like this, he’s far too tethered to that lectern, and the delivery is without a captivating rise and fall to grab attention.
4. Unbelievable. I just don’t buy that KS is as passionate about Labour as he says, it's not about if he is or not, it's about if we believe him and something isn't quite landing.
5. Wrong title. There’s no new chapter until the next general election, so I think they could’ve reframed it as a New Choice as they have changed from the Corbyn Labour Party to I’m not quite sure, but what is happening now.
6. Sound. That mic sound did nothing for KS, and it just sounded like an empty room, which I’m sure it was, but it needed a bit of warmth, so he sounded fuller to give him more presence.
7. Reassurance needed. KS didn’t address any of the many questions Labour supporters have about Labour, so that's a missed opportunity to connect with the base.
The thing about comms is that if you can’t get people to listen, you don’t get the chance to convince them. There’s a comms, messaging, and strategy fix needed here. The good news for Labour is that there are 3 more years to go.
