I’ve pastored the same church for the last 15+ years. The hardest people to reach are those who think they’re saved because they 1. attend church, 2. walked an aisle, 3. prayed a prayer, or some other false assurance. They completely ignore what the fruit of their lives say.
As a pastor in the Bible-belt, I find a constant need to address false converts and cultural Christians in my sermons. Yes, I’m mindful of the atheist, but I’m more likely to have unsaved Christians ( @deaninserra’s phrase) in the church than atheists.
This requires showing clearly what biblical Christianity is: faith and repentance (salvation and lordship). Cultural Christianity thrives and survives on preaching that emphasizes faith, but ignore repentance. It majors on believing, but minors in obedience.
