58 years back, 18 Nov. 1962 a fierce battle was fought in Chushul's Rezang La, in which 114 soldiers out of 124 soldiers including Major Shaitan Singh were killed in action after giving a bloody nose
2. to Chinese. Due to heavy snowfall and hard terrain nobody visited Rezang La after the battle till Feb. 1963, a shepherd with his sheep and goats visited Rezang La where he saw some dead bodies in uniform and a lot of bullet shells and bombs, after seeing this he immediately
3. went back and informed the nearest military formation about this, few days later in mid February a search and recovery task was launched and a team of Red Cross and Indian Army went to Rezang La where they found 96 bodies (out of 114) but Major Shaitan Singh's body was missing
4. search continued and body of Major Shaitan Singh was found one or two days later near a boulder where he was placed by his two faithful jawans, there was one thing common in every dead body that no soldiers were shot in their backs after seeing such a tragic scene
5. Brigadier TN Raina, MVC (114 Bde Cdr) and other members of the team broke down. 96 bodies of soldiers of Charlie Company were cremated in Chushul high ground and Major Shaitan Singh's body was sent back to Jodhpur from Leh in an special Indian Air Force's airplane on
