Leaving Cert Politics and Society
New subject, first sat in 2018, I sat in 2019 (H1, yayy)
Genuinely believe it could be one of the biggest picked subjects in the entire LC program in a few years if it gets it's chance
But what IS it?

Going to break down the layout / paper first and then after I'll explain why I think this subject is absolutely critical in the coming years
So it's split in between all your general politics and sociology stuff but it's broken down to their most basic levels
Think the entirety of first year Politics/Sociology for college, over the course of Two years and kind of a little easier whilst also being more in depth

Paper is broke up into 3 sections
Short questions (same old stuff of like "what does the IMF stand for, not the Tom Cruise one, and "where is the UN headquarters?")
A data Question (will explain)
2 Essays with multiple choice, the best thing on probably the entire LEAVING CERT

I did mine on the rise of "Fake News", the real kind that actually threatens democracy and did a workshop with 1st years on it

Short Questions from 2019
Really really good selection of stuff based on the course and covers everything, anyone who shows up will get the majority of these right after 2 years in class

Data Based Question
So Two documents are presented to read and examine, with a series of questions that total 150/400 marks
It's very easy to go in depth with these and analyse them and draw conclusions from them to form your answers

Really good stuff that young people do have interest in

The layout of the course is based on learning about "Key Thinkers", these are political ideologists and such that have written about things the course covers, obviously you have you Marx, Hobbes, Locke and thatbut there's more specialised ones too
Subject also has without a doubt the best Book for leaving cert. One textbook and one workbook that has everything in it, short questions, essays, data questions the lot
Anyway on to WHY I think this could be one of the most important subjects in the coubtry in the next few years
How many times a week do you see people posting petitions/information on Instagram stories, how many times do you see a "why are we not talking about this", how many bios do you see that include "political" things
I'd guess a lot, because young people have a huge interest in it
I'd guess a lot, because young people have a huge interest in it
Young people and "social media activism" is absolutely huge, people care about the issues facing the world around equality, justice and climate change and although no one really takes CSPE all too seriously, by the time they're in TY/5th year a lot of young people would
hugely benefit from not only being able to learn more about these things, but themselves be able to word their own outlooks.
It's not a "learn and regurgitate" subject, it's about forming your own conclusions, drawing from what you learn over the course of Two years

The subject is the perfect choice for students who share all these instagrams and petitions and the like as it gets them into the mindset of questioning things as they get older
A lot of those who take it do Politics/Law/ sociology/ care work after the exams

It really could be a massive massive subject in years to come and I believe it has every right to be.
After going through it, I full on believe it should be a core subject. I'm not joking. It is such and important subject and I'm so glad it exists now

Which is why I am aiming to teach it, I want to make sure it continues to have an impact on people like it had on me
Haven't been this enthusiastic about it in ages but I think it's without a doubt the best addition to the leaving cert since calculators
Forgot to mention the benefits towards college too. The project is Basically a college assignment, with Harvard style refrencing, bibliographies and all. Such a great subject for getting people into a college style learning mindset too!!
