THREAD: Data journalism is a critical component of holding the powerful accountable. We’re eager to support more projects that use DATA in ambitious & innovative ways by journalists around the globe, not just in the U.S! Get inspired by these recent data projects we've supported:
1) One of the most groundbreaking projects we supported in 2020 is @Tahtone, @Bobby_L33, & @mcgeoff's "Land-Grab Universities." They created a database of 11 million acres of land taken from Indigenous people and granted to elite universities in the US. https://bit.ly/2OzdV2X
2) "Mapping Makoko" by @JacopoOttaviani, @theOluwatosin & @EROMOSELEJOHNA combines data, satellite images, on-the-ground multimedia journalism, and long-form storytelling in a bottom-up mapping project that helped the community fight for their land rights. https://bit.ly/3qsuY4W
3) Despite publicly denying it, China has secretly built scores of new internment camps for Muslim minorities in recent years. "Built to Last" by @meghara, @alisonkilling, & Christo Buschek used satellite images to identify 260+ secret detention compounds. https://bit.ly/37iNfu4
4) With first-of-its-kind research using thousands of surveys by people incarcerated in women's prisons in more than 20 states, "No Choice but to Do It" by @justinevdl examines how structural inequalities result in the punishment of the most marginalized. https://bit.ly/2OBJkSn
5) "Sucked Dry" by @Mugira & @annikam93 uses interactive maps and data visualizations to dig into land grabbing by foreign governments and agribusiness firms, straining the Nile River's natural withdrawal limits and worsening international water conflicts. https://bit.ly/2NvK2Aj
6) "Refugees From the Earth" by @AbrahmL & @MeridithKohut uses a climate migration model to examine the daunting implications of climate change for global migration: a re-mapping of the planet's population could lead to catastrophe without urgent action. https://bit.ly/37llCR7
7) All of these projects use cutting-edge technology to parse through dense information that often expose exploitation and corruption. So, if you're looking to dig into an underreported story with data, send us a proposal! We're looking forward to it. 👉 https://bit.ly/3aoEf8n
