We were in the field last week and it was brutally cold with nighttime temperatures between -30 and -40 F every night and daytime highs around -6 to -10F. Nonetheless, it was a nice time to be in the woods…as long as we kept moving! (1/5)
We did some trail camera work and ensured our cams were still working through the cold temps. Luckily, they were. Good news is that we have a lot of footage of wolf packs this winter so we should get some good pack/population estimates. (2/5)
We got some interesting footage of Wolf V087 (see stills below) and the Fawn Crick Pack. The Fawn Crick Pack appears to be 3 wolves now and we think Wolf V087 has become the breeding male. This is quite surprising to us as V087 was a subordinate male in this pack last year. (3/5)
Not really sure what happened here but we will continue to study this pack.
And, out of curiosity, we checked out some locations from our collared wolves and found 2 deer that these wolves had killed. Very little was left of either deer. (4/5)

The snow is not super deep right now so we suspect it has been a leaner winter for wolves than usual. Typically, deeper snow makes it easier wolves for wolves to kill deer, especially if that deep snow has a frozen crust on it. (5/5)
