Hi folks. I thought it was about time for an intro/rant combo thread. So here goes.

Adam here. I run RPG Kitchen. I've been running it for a few years now in an 'unofficial' way. Last year, during lockdown, I made the move of making RK a Community Interest Company (1/x)
Or CIC for short. CICs (in the UK, where I'm based) are a form of Social Enterprise. That means that RK is a /for-profit/ organisation. It turns out that in the UK at least, being a charity can be expensive. (i.e. a lot of the money raised goes towards just existing!) (2/x)
Being a CIC is a lot cheaper and easier. While CICs are not charities they do have the legal obligation to use their profits to help their community.

I wanted the community I served to be 'those experiencing food poverty', but that isn't an actual community, as such. (3/x)
I reached a compromise where the community that RK serves is 'RPG creators wishing to earn a living from their work'. I am still able to make sure that excess profits go to feed the hungry.

But first of all I have to help the community. (4/x)
This was good in a way. It helped me focus. I had a narrower goal. (Raising money to feed the hungry is a great goal but incredibly broad, and constraints can help creativity). (5/x)
I started work last year on a new online shop, for creators to sell their digital products.

It's focused on RPGs only, pays creators more, and can even handle PDF rentals. And it's coming soon. (6/x)
Aside from the shop, I'm planning an online convention to highlight creators from the community, I'm working on collaborative blog posts with other writers, producing a weekly newsletter, and a few other things. (7/x)
And here comes the rant part: it's damn hard to reach people!!

I'm fortunate to have a lot of followers. I'm also really lucky if about 5% of my followers actually ever see what I tweet. And I think it's getting worse (8/x)
I think Twitter can be great. I've certainly made a lot of connections here, and a lot of friends. But for **actually communicating reliably** it can suck. (9/x)
I offered to help people with a boost earlier this week, but ironically, it soon became unmanageable, and I was forced to cut and paste a response, because there's no good way here to talk to 100 people at once, so everyone sees the message. (10/x)
I think that this platform is starting to slow me down. It's inhibiting progress.

(and that's for me, with 7k followers - I know it's worse for those with fewer followers. my personal account has like 200 followers and I generally get very little engagement there!) (11/x)
A better platform is needed.

Enter Discord.

I don't think it's perfect. When Discord servers get too busy my neurodiverse head gets all fuzzed up.

But perfect is the enemy of progress, or so they say (12/x)
There is already a general issue RPG Kitchen Discord (invite here -- https://discord.gg/VZwyWTU ) and that's going to remain. It's open to everyone. All are welcome. (No nazis/fascists/racists/sexists/homophobes/.... ) (13/x)
The RK Discord is going to change into a bit of a lounge: a place to hang out, chat RPGs, and hopefully find games and friends. Basically a safe social space for role-players (14/x)
And as of today, I've created a new Discord, to support the new #TabletopBoost initiative.

This server will be for any TTRPG creator (or anyone who wants to become one) who is willing to help their fellows.

(15/x)
(By creator, I mean writers, designers, artists, editors, readers, ... anyone involved in the creation, publication, distribution, ... of TTRPGs)

(16/x)
This community will exist to help each other, to boost each other, to provide feedback and assistance.

If that is your sort of things here's an invite ( https://discord.gg/vu85e3p3Q5 )

I believe that by standing together, we can improve the situation for everyone.

(17/x)
Finally, if you would like to support us, we have a Patreon. I haven't shared it in forever. It's honestly a little bit out of date. But I'm going to be brave and share it.
