The women of Ireland, unlike our sister in the U.K. do have a gender based right, that was probably intended as a sex based right, that has hung around in our Constitution because no one could be arsed to get rid of it.
Isn’t that the grossest example of sex stereotyping you’ve ever seen? We have the cheeky switch for. “woman” to “mother”, the assigning of gender roles and the attempt to keep women out of the public sphere and you don’t have to be a committed historian to see how well it worked.
You see this throughout the world, the sex based rights given to women are always the right “not to”, not to partake in elections, not to be part of public life, not to have full bodily autonomy, not to get a seat on the good bus.
