I encounter people who have great ideas but don’t want to share them too broadly because they don’t want them to be stolen. I have some thoughts on that..
For someone to steal your idea, they have to have three things at the ready. Time, funding, and the same level of passion for the idea that you do.
The chances are very low that you will share your idea with someone who has all of these, and also who is disingenuous enough to “steal” someone else’s idea.
Then, think about the benefits to building in public and sharing your idea. You’ll get tons of feedback, positive and negative. Both will help you refine your idea and make it better.
You’ll also get referrals and connections. Either from people who are going to want to work with you or for people who want to fund your idea.
Plus, psychologically speaking, committing to something in public makes you much more likely to follow through. I choose sharing. And, I love to contribute thoughts to other peoples ideas. AMA.
