For our friends in the south without water here are a few tips to keep you safe as you boil snow, a 🧵:
1. Snow boils down more quickly and more efficiently if you have a bit of liquid in the pot. Use your lid.
1A. Skim the fresh layer of snow. Don't go deep. The deeper you go
The more contaminants there are
1B. The snow off your roof is grey water. Not potable because of many roofing materials. Fine for use to wash or flush with.
2. Boil your melted snow for 10 minutes
2A. Many organisms just go dormant in snow and wake up once melted
2B. Boiling for 10 minutes kills them and makes potable water. Again, unless you have a steel roof with nontoxic enamel finish, do not use roof snow for drinking or cooking!
Non-water advise:
Do not bring your grill indoors! Huddle around it outside if you need to warm up.
If you have a tent, time to sleep in it indoors.
Layer, layer, layer, and change bottom layer of it gets wet or you sweat.
Move. Get up. Rearrange your cupboards. Walk.
Do something to get your blood moving. Knit that scarf. It will keep your fingers moving and warm.
Hang whatever sheets and blankets you have extra over your windows and doors to rooms you're not using. Keep that heat in the 1-2 rooms you're living in until you get power back
Back to water: if you haven't lost water or froze your pipes yet, make sure your faucets (all) have a good trickle going. Moving water is harder to freeze. Open your cupboard doors under your sinks. You need that air circulation to help keep your pipes warm. When you get out
Of this, invest in heat tape for your pipes. This will happen again. Global warming is not going away any time soon. If you have ?s reach out to your snowy north friends. We've been there. We know what it's like to live w/o power for days, weeks in a snow storm.
We're here to help in any way we can. Final note: broth is your friend. Drink it. If you can't get water it will help replace your water for a while.
