Diversity and Inclusion vs. Justice and Equity:

Diversity asks,

“Who do we need in the room to check off the box?”

Equity responds,

“Who is trying to get in the room but can’t? Who has been in the room but made to feel invisible?”
Inclusion asks,

“Has everyone had a chance to express their ideas?”

Justice responds,

“Whose ideas have been overlooked or not taken seriously because they aren’t in the majority?”
Diversity asks,

“How many more people of color do we have this year than last?”

Equity responds,

“Have we designed this with everyone in mind? What conditions have we created that maintain certain groups as the perpetual majority here?”
Inclusion asks,

“Does this environment make everyone feel like they belong?”

Justice responds,

“Whose sense of belonging has been sacrificed to allow others to feel comfortable while maintaining dehumanizing views?”
Sometimes it's our responses and reframing that creates the type of equitable changes needed to make this world a more just place for all.
