Great from @chakrabortty
Now received wisdom amongst some pundits that no point Lab taking on Tories on public spending-everyone agrees on need to spend etc etc
Not true. Tories have spent £bns on *emergency* spending.
That is not a change in political or economic ideology [1/n] https://twitter.com/chakrabortty/status/1362315290109952000
I don't think some pundits truly get how Covid is playing out in 4 phases:
-emergency (still in this)
-survival (as measures are withdrawn)
-recovery (but long time before this feeds thru to households)
-rebuilding and restructuring [2/n]
Sunak literally had no choice but to spend £bns to protect people during emergench phase. That is not a change in ideology.
But further huge levels of spending will be needed to get us through the survival/ recovery/ rebuilding phases
[3/n]
And we still have to confront the huge legacy crises eg social care, housing, public services, infrastructure, inequality.
So, can we stop with silly claims there is no room for Labour to differentiate itself from Tories on a UK rescue, recovery, and rebuilding strategy [4/4]
