EV Transition for 2030 - A Thread
This is something which I think needs to be made more clear for some people. The UK Govt has stated it intends to ban sale of new combustion engine cars by 2030.
But this is not the date from which manufacturers will need to start their transition to all electric car production. It is the date by which they need to have *completed* their transition.
This is because any production lines still set up for #ICE cars by 2030 will be useless and therefore losing massive amounts of money from day one on 01/01/2030. So ALL production lines will need to have moved to EV only *ahead* of 2030.
But for any manufacturer, moving all their production facilities to EV will take years. So they will start that process years in advance of 2030. Also, as each production line, or factory, completes transition to EV only, it will start production immediately.
Even if it is completed years before 2030. Because manufacturers won’t be able to sustain having a production line that cost 100s of millions standing idle and losing money.
Also economies of scale and efficiency of production obtain maximum benefit when production is not split between 2 different lines of production where key components, tooling & machinery cannot be shared between them.
So this will further accelerate transition to EV, because once they start, manufacturers will not want a prolonged period of dual #ICE & #BEV production.
So 2030 is the date by which manufacturers will need to have *completed* their transition to EV only production; and the logistics and economics of that transition means that they will need to start producing significant numbers of EVs well in *advance* of that date.
