My mid-life back to uni and hang out in hallowed halls ( @OxfordSBS DIPSI), is now hanging out in not-so-hallowed Zoom, but learning lots. Various things that I have worked on, studied and read over the last 35 years or so, coalescing in ways I did not expect. thanks @teppofelin
For instance, one of the readings today looks at the gig economy, and it relates to a presentation I saw from @geoplace at the @JWI_Berlin a couple of years ago, and also work I'm doing with @UtmostHQ
@marcventresca used a Gartner hype cycle to talk about how markets come about, so I dug out one that I led when I was at Gartner a decade or so ago.
The discussions yesterday about networks took me back to the early days of blogging when @jobsworth introduced me to the Dunbar number and @amcafee to Granovetter's weak-ties.
today's case study with Victor Seidel looks at #designthinking I did one of the early courses at SAP at the D-School with @Mchewd aback in the day, probably around 2006 or so.
I found myself re-reading some Schumpeter and Marx last night. Turns out they are have much more in common than most economists would like to admit. That took me back to a lecture with Duncan Greaves at KZN in 1989 or so.
One of the text books (O'reilly&tushman Lead to Disrupt) discusses SAP ByD, and hits the organizational challenges spot on. It underplays the technical ones, but that is probably for another thread.
the discussions on regulation led me back to think about @1Br0wn @ChrisTMarsden excellent work on regulating code, which greatly influenced my PhD work. As we think more about platforms etc, @lessig code is law is still v relevant.
The cohort is getting to know each other, using whatsapp etc. Folks are from all over the world. there is a strong SAfrican contingent. one colleague connects in from Mongolia. Zoom break outs work, but I do miss the F2F interaction, and dismal university coffee.
Migrating a classroom course online is super-challenging, and it is generally working well. Canvas is fine for providing materials and course outlines, but it is not a collaborative learning platform. Having kids at uni, it gives me an insight into how they are learning too.
I should probably get off twitter and go and do the readings.
