The NUQ incident highlights few important issues concerning academia in Gulf and society in general:
- The incident of racist blog brought forward many incidents of personal, structural and systematic racism, white privilege, that existed in branch campuses for a long time (but no one addressed it openly). This also includes biases within faculty, leadership and power hierarchy
- QF’s success in investing in students and unlocking their potential. The alumni who took lead in fighting against this injustice are clearly equipped with the right skills and understand the power of their voices to bring about positive change in the society.
- The need for accountability towards the white privilege that is perpetuated both by local institutions and individuals who bring their unchecked biases towards the region with them.
-The need for an open dialogue, reform and recognition that though we have strong academic institutions, change is needed in many institutional processes, for more ethical teaching and research practices.
