The reality of the sex industry is that women are forced into it precisely because of economic circumstances. We should work towards eliminating the root cause of what forces women into it, rather than make it out as something empowering.
I also don’t feel like the type of feminism that argues that it’s an “empowering profession” stems from feminism having to evolve around men and what they want. I think it’s a bourgeois creation, because they don’t want us to address the root cause of the issue, which is
capitalism; and that’s why bourgeois, liberal women uphold that form of feminism too. Because their class position directly contributes to the issue, they’d rather make it out as a positive than a negative that they actively contribute to.
I would say, on an individual basis the sex industry functions on misogyny. But what upholds the industry in general is both the bourgeois men & women that argue that it’s something good, so they can distance themselves from the fact that they’re the reasons women resort to it.
