My line of thought is that the map of meaning here is probably not as straightforward or as simple as the sci-fi narrative of EBEs from other planets. My impression is that it seems to be an "alien" depth of ourselves "running the projector," a continuation of
what we see in the mirror and what we see in nature around us, but with its complex, hidden and mysterious form beyond a perceptual boundary. This perceptual disconnect might be described as the "fallen" state of humanity or as the "control system" amongst other labels.
The extended hidden character of ourselves in this additional but occluded territory would be not unlike the very familiar but hooded figures holding up the shadow puppets in Plato's allegory of the cave.
This extended space-between-space of additional dimensional complexity, the same notion of hyperspace that's reduced to a slip-and-slide tunnel between the folded-over here and there in science-fiction, would be housing a continuation of us. It would house a
continuation particularly of our psyche beyond the boundaries of what we see as our life, beyond the boundaries we identify at the beginning at birth to our ends at death, not "after" the boundary of the human body but a dimension of psyche extendant into additional dimensions.
That extended root system of ourselves, of our psyche, these "aliens" across a perceptual veil, are in their nearest appearance characteristic of the perceptual disconnect itself as a trickster-adversary, a gatekeeper and guardian.
When we seem to bump into its territory, out of bounds for the human identity in this time and place, we provoke a response as with the "control system" feedback loop described in this article.

I think the perceptual boundary is largely mediated at scale, amongst many other
environmental factors, by earth's precessional cycle, to which I'd suggest as others have suggested the ancient mythological ages of spiritual awareness and spiritual disconnect are aligned.
Nuclear fission and its effect on our environment seems to have provoked a more-explicit and more-tangible UAP response unlike all else in our recent history. Nukes perhaps skirt that boundary and seem to affect and concern what operates on the other side.
UFO disclosure could be, and in my view is the same "unveiling" broadly expressed out of the human psyche as other archetypal stories of unveiling-apocalypse at the end of the world-age and beginning of a new one, except we tend to see it more often in the language of our
current perceptual paradigm as a tangible "technological singularity" "the Great Filter" or the UFO-utopia that seems to many to be kept from the public as if it were casually stored under a tarp in an Air Force bunker.
I know Bigelow in the latest excellent @g_knapp interview suggested that he prefers to keep the afterlife and UFOs separate, but I think the only value in keeping the topics separate in the public discussion is that one is a bridge too far for people who would rather focus
on making some tangible scientific progress in understanding the physical mechanics of the UAP phenomenon and then applying that knowledge towards practical technologies. So who's running the projector? Us... well sort of... ;) and that's my two-cents.
