debating the ethics of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich
it’s acceptable to put peanut butter on a banana, and jelly is fruit, so it’s acceptable to put a banana on a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. however, what if you remove the bread and just put the peanut butter and jelly directly onto the banana. would that be acceptable?
i say yes
however, this brings us to another question: what happens if you remove the peanut butter? would it be acceptable to put only jelly on a banana? in theory it would be no different then a fruit bowl, however in practice a banana covered in jelly is very different then a fruit bowl
some might say that a banana with pb&j is more acceptable than a banana with only j due to the fact that the pb acts as a mediator between the banana and the j. when putting pb&j on a banana, the pb would obviously sit between the banana and the jelly, however
when the “b&pb&j” enters one’s mouth, this structural integrity is almost immediately abandoned. one must imagine that the jelly at some point makes direct contact with the banana
the anti-“b&j” crowd would probably argue that this fact is irrelevant, but to them I pose this simple question: what other combination of foods becomes unacceptable as soon as you remove one item?
much to think about
