Iris color not totally unrelated to functionality, as some have claimed.

This study finds blue-eyed people have somewhat worse eyesight (2 parameters), based on a large sample of Europeans.

Why I am investigating this? There are somewhat large race differences in pupil size, that seem to fit with intelligence gaps, but no relationship to intelligence within group.

Iris color often claimed to be irrelevant, e.g., here, by mainstream evo psychs in 1997.
However, I think Evo Psych people suffer from a bit too much signaling á la "look, I am not racist, so I am going to make this claim without references". Iris color obviously differs by race and sub-ancestry, so worth taking a look.
Why ask about iris color though? The big mystery is why blue eyes were selected for. Is this purely a peacock tail sort of sexual selection, or does it have some benefits not so far identified? One has to actually look to investigate this latter possibility.
This large Chinese study, with less ancestry confounding, finds lighter iris has thinner lenses. Not sure what this could mean practically, but maybe something.
