Tonight is the start of QuiltCon, the Modern Quilt Guild's yearly quilt show + workshops/lectures/panels (~20K people go). This year it's happening virtually.
I'm going to be watching the awards ceremony tonight and figured I'd share a thread of winning modern quilts for y'all.
I'm going to be watching the awards ceremony tonight and figured I'd share a thread of winning modern quilts for y'all.
The awards ceremony starts in 15 minutes, so feel free to mute this thread now if you don't want to see award winning quilts and my random thoughts about this year's quilts.
I was invited to judge the show a couple of years ago, and I learned a LOT doing it. There are generally 3 judges: a certified quilt judge, a celebrity judge from a design field other than quilting (it was Mondo Guerra from Project Runway the year I judged), and a modern quilter.
It's the 3 judges, 3 days, 800+ quilts, and a slew of support staff. Two people taking notes, one person with the info on each quilt, groups of people holding up quilts (and taking turns, it's exhausting work), and generally judges are the only ones who are allowed to talk.
By the end of the 3 days I had completely lost my voice but came away with a lot of knowledge about how quilt judging works! Also Mondo and I got into a lot of heated, passionate debates about quilt design and it was the most fun I'd had in a while!
Ahhh starting the show with relatable chat about broadcasting from the basement and also all the hashtags! #quiltcontogetherchat #quiltcontogether #quiltcon
Starting out, first category: Quilting Challenge!
The challenge this year was to work with wedges.
Next Category - Applique!
They are going very quickly so no time for comments at the moment :)
1st place - Dresden Coffins by Andrea Salisbury - all the black and white shapes are using the same fabric, just cut in different areas.
They're showing videos of the 1st place winners hearing that they won, and Andrea could barely speak. So sweet!!

Next category: Fabric Challenge - people had to make a quilt from a specified fabric.
awww, Heather posted on instagram this was her first quilt entered and just wanted to learn the process.
awwww video with Debra talking about having to ask how to even fill out the form to submit her quilt, and also she's in Hawaii and it's GORGEOUS.
Next category: Group & Bee Quilts!
The "fence" is 1/4" bias tape. (holy crap)
47 people worked on this quilt from multiple countries.
Heather (the presenter) is talking about how all the group quilts were heavily influenced by the pandemic.
