First I ever heard of Rush Limbaugh was in my dad's car returning home from a haircut. Rush was ranting about women "farding" while driving.

To fard, I learned that day, is to apply make-up. And women farded a lot while driving. And it was a huge problem. According to Rush.
His rant for our whole ride home was about "women drivers" farding in their cars.

I thought it was hilarious. Because farding sounds like "farting" and I was a child. A child who'd just learned his dad liked listening to someone talk about something that sounded like farting.
If I had that moment to do over again, I'd turn off the radio. If my dad turned it back on, I'd shit my pants, vomit on the dash, & scream obscenities until his senses had no choice but to associate it all w Rush's voice. If that still didn't work, I'd punch my dad in the throat.
Here's an article from the time about how people responded to Rush's farding bit.

Rush Limbaugh is responsible for every conversation w my dad being like walking a minefield where every possible topic is a bomb waiting to explode in white male grievance. Entertainment, sports, weather; it doesn't matter - all bombs.
Rush Limbaugh is responsible for my dad separating himself from our family. Because of the things he repeats and because he secludes himself in his bedroom or in the minivan in the driveway for hours on end because he can't bring himself to miss a show...
...and no one else can stand listening to the show. Holidays? Visits from his grandchildren? Where's Gramps? Is he still in the car? Of course he is. Listening to the radio.

Rush Limbaugh is responsible for my dad describing this time listening to his pushers as "my worship."
Because while, yes, my dad is a grown man, a former soldier & teacher, responsible for his own actions, he is also an addict. He is addicted to the grievances peddled by Rush & Hannity. He is addicted to how they claim to understand him, to how they make him feel special.
He injects them into his veins every day. He sees everything thru the lens of what they've said or what they'll say about it later. And they get rich. My dad just gets farther from reality & bitterer because reality is the one moving away from him as far as he believes.
I had the misfortune once of a shuttle ride to a mechanic in a car that was playing Hannity's show. In less than 5 mins, he rampaged from Hillary Clinton bleaching computers to gay people being executed on roofs of hotels in the Middle East. And he never stopped.
When the ride was over, I felt like I'd had a firehose opened in my face. "Fuck," I thought. "My dad doesn't stand a chance."

And Rush Limbaugh is responsible for that.
