HEADS UP

I’m seeing videos of water damage resulting from burst pipes due to the winter storm system in Texas and other states.

USE YOUR PHONE TO DOCUMENT WHERE THE WATER IS COMING FROM.

The source and direction of the water affect whether insurance will cover the damage.

You’ll need to show the water did not come from external flooding (bottom up), for instance.

Many homeowners insurance policies will not cover damage from “flooding” and will tell you only flood instance covers that damage.

So video and photograph the pipe sources, etc.

Here’s an example of water damage that can look like bottom-up “flooding” and for which homeowners policies will often try to deny coverage.

(I talked with this person, and he already got his insurance agent to come verify.)

Countless ceilings are falling in too. It’s awful.
