ok I have run a few tests with FB's content block
they're following 301 redirects (they've always done this anyways) so you can't post news with a url shortener or custom redirect
it is obviously using some sort of classifier and blocks sites that look sufficiently newsy, eg Gov health depts, satire sites like the chaser
Aggregators are not blocked, weirdly, so eg I can post flipboard links for guardian stories, but user has to click through from flipboard
I tested a few right wing misinfo wordpress sites, and they are blocked from posting
you can still share URLs in messenger with large group chats
clarification - SA healths FB page is empty, but you can still post links to SA health
you can link to a tweet which is a link to a story (this is actually probably the best workaround right now)
I guess FB doesn't want to go to war to twitter, so it is quite funny to me that maybe people will use this to get around FB's news content block
posts don't show on a news site's FB page if you're logged in and in Aus, but they do if you're not in Aus (VPN into UK) and not logged in
probably important to note for page admins - your content is not gone or deleted, it is just hidden to Aus users as far as I can tell
I suspect you could maybe make a new site under a new domain and block FB's crawler and maybe get away with it, but that's obvs way too involved right now when they might just roll it back in a few days
one upside is a bunch of covid-19 misinformation stuff which FB still hasn't taken down is now inaccessible in Australia because it looks "newsy"
crowdtangle is a very helpful view of how much of a hit these news publications are taking per post (I assume these are all still auto-publishing?)
