Seeing a lot of "time to deactivate Facebook" tweets today (which is totally understandable). As a community organiser who relies on the platform to deliver peer support to thousands of people living with HIV every day, a Facebook mass exodus isn't an option...
/ There are countless Facebook groups created for and by people with traditionally less power. No other social media platform offers the ability to run digital drop-in centres or "town hall meetings".
/ Ironically, when we started TIM over eight years ago, we were accused of excluding older PLHIV who weren't as digitally literate as younger poz ppl. Now FB is predominantly used by ppl 35+. We can't shift TIM to TikTok. (lol)
/ Over the years, Aus HIV/AIDS organisations have received obscene amounts of money to replicate TIM on bespoke websites/platforms. It failed miserably (meanwhile we continued to *not* get paid to do the work, but that's another story.)
/ You've got to go where people are, you can't ask them to come to you. I always knew TIM would live and die according to Facebook's own mortality. I suppose today I am worried that day is becoming closer.
