MY RE:ZERO 2 EPISODE 20 THREAD
Just me rambling about a bunch of nice framing choices, characters and whatnot.

The first scene was a surprise, as it wasn't in the original novel, but a side story. What's afflicting young Roswaal here is something we've seen in the Memory Snow episode.
Anyhow, I think this little sequence is worth a few comments.

Putting aside the kiss (part of her seduction), this scene goes to show Echidna's strategy of winning hearts over, finding people at their weakest & feigning understanding in her little act. The target here being Roswaal, the character mirroring Subaru this arc, is also notable.
I'm sad the mention of Geuse didn't make the cut, but this little bit of Sanctuary SOL was great at establishing character dynamics, further underlining just how strong of a presence Echidna has behind every moving piece of Arc 4.
Every interaction between the Sanctuary group is natural, except when it comes to those with Echidna. Her face is always hidden, and she has no qualms doing things behind Beatrice's back. She doesn't mind pulling all of her allies' strings, sacrificing Ryuzu & Roswaal.
"Devil" here is originally translated as "Warlock" — the male equivalent of "Witch". Melancholy (Acedia) is, like Vanity, one of the two "historical sins".
Just like almost every older character in the series, Hector has a connection to Echidna, and seemingly a score to settle.
We don't get to see what happens next as we follow Ryuzu, but notice Hector's outfit, his tic of prolonging words, and the orange eyes.

Roswaal has a habit of looking at people with his yellow eye while he's scheming.
Although we won't know what happened there after Ryuzu left, it must've been pretty notable for Roswaal.

Ryuzu's parting words to Beatrice gives a whole new weight to Beatrice referring to herself as "Betty", doesn't it?
Getting this context on Sanctuary & Roswaal is what enables Subaru to think that maybe, just maybe, he's someone to be reasoned with.
This is the first time Subaru is going to Roswaal with knowledge, surprising him.
This is the first time Subaru is going to Roswaal with knowledge, surprising him.
This is also the first time Roswaal actually felt his ideals threatened, gradually losing his cool throughout the scene. His attack on Subaru is aimed at his self-worth beyond Return by Death, without which he is "less than ordinary" — but that's an issue Subaru overcame in EP38.
He attacks Garfiel as well, questioning the validity of his feelings. To Roswaal, who lived by a single obsession for 400 years, Garfiel readily embracing change is hard to believe.
And by embracing that change, Garfiel, like Subaru, ascended from being a pawn in Roswaal's game.

This scene further explains Garfiel's mindset and why he sides with Subaru — because being [needed] is the most gratifying thing there is and one of the best indirect ways to validate someone.
This is why, as Garfiel says, Roswaal's words no longer hold any weight.
This is why, as Garfiel says, Roswaal's words no longer hold any weight.
To Roswaal, remaining stagnant is a weakness everyone has, including himself—and as something he knows well, it's a weakness he can use to manipulate others. People not changing, people being attached to one thing only—these are all traits he can exploit in others.
Roswaal is framed right into the fire as he exposes the weakness of his own heart, his awareness & exploitation of which being what allowed him to pull everyone's strings.
Feels great to see Subaru having forsaken his male chauvinist ideals, as he would rather see Emilia succeed on her own instead of pampering her.
This is the same guy who had lines like "girls are about beauty" and "cute girls should dress to please others" in early S1.

When Subaru makes the same declaration he had in the throne room, it carries a whole different weight. Instead of affirming himself as her white knight out of ego, he is her supportive figure, believing in her growth & ability.
If it wasn't clear enough, this is THE Roswaal/Subaru scene, where all their parallels are laid bare, even visually like with superimposed shots.
But while Roswaal's idealization is a self-serving one (akin to S1 Subaru who wanted a heroine), Subaru believes in her strength.

Part of Subaru's growth has been about him accepting all of Emilia, including her weaknesses. It has been about him learning to be a shoulder to lean on, much like she was to him, all the while encouraging her own growth rather than stick to his own self-serving "heroine" vision.
This arc is, at its core, all about accepting who you are, including your past, & choosing to move forward still. It's about rejecting the notion that change is something scary, and about how there are people to help you through it when you do decide to take that step to improve.
Also, there's a neat little visual callback in the new ED. Where Emilia's shadow is looking backwards in the first OP (him not seeing her for who she is), she is fully facing him in the ED.
Take note of how the lyrics are "the only precious thing" at that very moment in the OP…
