Let’s talk about what just happened in South Carolina re: abortion

First and foremost—there is no ban in effect at *this moment* in time. Abortion is STILL LEGAL in South Carolina. The SC House just passed a bill aimed at banning most abortions (following a passed proposal in the SC Senate on Jan 28th) BUT 1/x
It is all but guaranteed repro justice groups will sue, tying the bill up in litigation and meaning that it will not immediately take effect. The governor *is* expected to sign this bill, making it law, BUT their goal is really to make a statement, rather than enact policy. 2/x
That’s how this always goes—endless legal hurdles, barrier after barrier enacted—keeping our hands busy trying to cut through red tape. We know laws like this are unconstitutional. We know bodily autonomy is a human right. But we’re forced to keep fighting for it in courts. 3/x
This bill will ban abortions once a “fetal heartbeat” is detected—somewhere around 6-8 weeks. Most people do not know they are pregnant at this point. “fetal heartbeat” is also a manipulative term: https://www.newsweek.com/what-fetal-heartbeat-doctors-say-thats-misnomer-1440178 4/x
This law claims exceptions for rape, incest, fetal anomaly, or potential harm to the pregnant person’s life. doctors are expected to give a *Sheriff* the CONTACT INFO (!!!) of any patient seeking care after an assault 5/x

But what we really want to say is: we aren’t going anywhere. South Carolina, we are still here to help you obtain the care that is your right. We will continue fight bills like this, and continue to support our SC callers in accessing abortion care. 7/7
