I'll just say the woman we bid farewell to today will leave a greater, more loving, lasting legacy than Rush Limbaugh will. All of her children, many of her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and both great-great grandchildren were in the church today, along with so many friends.
All of us were sobbing at some point, remembering her, something she said or did to make us feel loved and special. She was a prodigious seamstress, crocheter and knitter. All of us have afghans and blankets that she made just for us, her arms embracing us forever.
She was tough (she had to be, she more or less raised seven kids on her own) but loving and fair. She was a rock, at some point in each of our lives, for all of us, steadfast and supportive and steady.
She knew the grief of losing a child, one of her daughters died young in an auto accident. But she didn't let that stop her. She pushed it down because her other kids needed her. I thought of the wonderful @MarshallRamsey drawing of Barbara Bush greeting her daughter Robin.
I've thought of that drawing often since I heard the news on Saturday. I keep picturing Bev greeting her daughter Susie exactly like that. That's the part that gives me comfort and that I've shared with my best friend, one of Bev's daughter.
Bev left nothing but love and happy memories. One of her final gifts was a pillow she knitted herself and finished just before she became ill. She was making it for one of her daughters and her other kids gave it to her today, a final hug and "it's okay now."
I don't know what awaited Limbaugh the moment he took his last gasp and I don't care. He wasn't a good person. He won't be remembered for anything good or kind or decent. His small, sad, bitter life cowers next to the large and beautiful life and legacy of my friend's mom.
