On the topic of Facebook's decision to ban news, here's a LIBRARIAN'S TEN TIPS on how to stay informed about the world (A THREAD):
1. @Google's News app is actually very good (and it's a good thing they've signed major publisher to it). Download and install and select a variety of news sources (such as those described next)...
2. @abcnews and @guardian are free and reliable sources of information (but take The Guardian's opinion pieces with a grain of salt). @DeutscheWelle from Germany has great English language content for world news. Make one of these your browser homepage like in the old days!
3. @ConversationEDU is a site run with universities that helps the public understand cutting-edge research about the world (in all sorts of fields). It's written to be read by everyone (not in horrible academicese) so get into it!
4. You should pay for at least one source of news in Australia because media diversity matters. I subscribe to @crikey_news (for straight down the line political analysis), @smh (for my NSW news), @nytimes (coz it's cheap and a good source of American news).
5. If you have the money and want longer-form analysis of Australian society and culture, hit up @THEMONTHLY , The Quarterly Essay, and potentially The Saturday Paper (real top shelf here tho).
6. News podcasts are your friend! ABC @RadioNational produce brilliant and thoughtful analysis, Schwartz Media's @7ampodcast goes in depth on important issues, and most news outlets globally will do a daily wrap by podcast.
7. Consult with your Librarian (me!) about potential blogs and smaller media outlets! Some of the best analysis is coming from dedicated blogs (like @matthewstoller's BIG, AARE's @AAREBlog Matters, and @aeonmag is a great culture and knick knacks email).
8. You're allowed to read things that take an ideological position (I enjoy @TheEconomist, I think @australian and the @FinancialReview actually provide an important perspective even if I disagree with them), just remember that it's important to separate fact from opinion.
9. Don't trust anything you see on Facebook.
10. Except this post (if you see it on Facebook).
You can follow @pat_norman.
