I've told this a few times, I'm telling it again: a few years ago I wrote a personal attack on @scottderrickson for doing THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL remake. It was cruel and I thought I was being funny. Scott reached out and said that I could say the things I said about the
movie without also being cruel to the filmmakers. He wasn't defending the film or himself... he was reaching out to me because my lashing out was an expression of pain. See, my offense w/the film was that I felt a kind of ownership of the original film. Knowing that film and
loving that film had actually became a part of the personality I had created to assimilate into this culture. So I took it personally and responded in kind. My first instinct when Scott reached out was to bat his hand away. I'm glad I didn't. He was right then. He's right now.
I still get angry about things. I make mistakes and I try to learn from them. But I hope I save my vitriol for stuff that's actually socially deranged and hurtful rather than for stuff that I just feel some kind of ownership over. And I make sure I'm punching up when I punch.
Anyway, just been on my mind today as Scott completes day 6 of his new film. Love you, brother, and thanks for taking a second back then to reach out when you had every right and every reason not to.
