Historians say BASIC INSTINCT is canonically queer solely due to the presence of Sharon Stone. Here's what historical texts won't tell you: There’s more to this sexy thriller than merely Sharon Stone's (godlike) face. This is everything gay that happens in Basic Instinct.(THREAD)
BASIC INSTINCT is set in San Francisco, a city rich with LGBTQ history. The movie also features the Golden Gate Bridge, one of the oldest, sturdiest, and longest Lesbians.
The murder weapon used in the opening scene is an ice pick. An ice pick is seen numerous times throughout the film, like when Stone breaks apart ice. Breaking apart ice on a global scale, like climate change, is straight. But stabbing blocks of ice to drop in alcohol… gay.
Stone’s character, Catherine Tramell, is a crime novelist who lives on a cliff overlooking the sea. Nothing has ever been more lesbian than living near the ocean and spending your time plotting, writing about plotting, and carrying out your plots.
In the most infamous scene, Sharon Stone smokes a cigarette while wearing a turtleneck and a cloak—a favorite queer pastime.
Sharon Stone takes a polygraph test, which, many people don’t know this, is actually VERY queer. Even though a polygraph is a machine, which is super hetero, it *does* involve lying, anticipation, and twisting knobs—all of which are inherently queer.
At one point, it’s revealed that Catherine had an affair with a woman in college, who Catherine says was obsessed with her. But the woman says it was Catherine who was obsessed. Both being obsessed and saying someone is obsessed with *you*... gay.
And finally, Sharon Stone has a legit long-haired butch GIRLFRIEND named literally ROXY. To be the boob that Sharon Stone touches, I—
TL;DR: BASIC INSTINCT is about a queer woman who reads, writes, plots, basks in sea mist, plots, kisses her hot long-haired-butch girlfriend, and plots, all while existing near the longest lesbian in history, the Golden Gate Bridge. A Sapphic serve.
