access to training and resources still matters a lot in sports; having wealthy parents gives you a lot of advantages. but...
as someone who spent a lot of time in competitive swimming, worked really hard at it, and was solidly mediocre, it's also just the case that some people's bodies do things that other people's can't.
there are real barriers there that there aren't in most other professions. money and connectiosn can get a fool past the bar exam and into an elite law firm, but it's not going to get someone with my talent level onto an NBA team.
and again, the fact that less wealthy people can succeed is why the people who succeed in sports are looked down on or seen as undeserving. because the hierarchy of wealth is seen as natural and right, and people who trouble that are looked at askance. https://arcdigital.media/britney-has-nothing-to-lose-but-her-chains-c303e1492578
