So, we have been getting some flack for not opening our cafe for in-store seating/drinking/working yet and we'd like to set the record straight on why. Because no one likes getting yelled at for this.
First of all, over 100,000 people have died in the last month. COVID, despite what our government regulators deem as open or not, is still infectious and deadly. We are not any safer than we were months ago.
The safety of our staff is a top priority. Having people in here with their masks off does not feel safe, by any means. We can't open windows. We don't have a state of the art air filtration system, nor can we afford to make that happen.
We are, at our heart, a bookstore. And we are fortunate enough that we have this whole other business to keep us busy and bringing in some semblance of money. It might not be enough, but that's another conversation.
We don't think having people come for hours breathing in our space is a risk worth taking. We are sorry. We miss you all. We miss the regulars we used to see every day. We miss tinder dates & people playing Catan for hours. We miss the idle chatter & people lost in a book.
We just don't feel safe yet. Period. Until our staff is all vaccinated and the weather is warm enough to prop our door open, we don't see that changing any time soon. So, please don't yell at us for this choice. We can all do with less yelling in this world.
